A Dental Hygienist is part of the dental team trained to give preventative oral care and provide treatment for gum disease. Pontesbury has two Dental Hygienists, Fern and Sharon.
Our Dental Hygienists provide professional cleaning and polishing of your teeth and lots of tips on how to improve your existing home care to make sure you can remove all the plaque from your mouth; plaque is the sticky substance which grows on your teeth and is the main cause of gum diseases. They can also give you dietary advice on how to prevent decay in your teeth. For our smaller patients our hygienist can apply fluoride and sealants to your child’s teeth to help prevent holes from forming.
Will it hurt? No professional teeth cleaning is not painful, although our hygienists can give local anaesthetic for more in depth cleaning, this would be explained to you if the need arises.
Do I need to see a dentist? Ideally you should be seeing a dentist regularly, but if you aren’t a registered patient here at Pontesbury you can still see our hygienists under direct access arrangements, just phone for an appointment.
What does a hygienist appointment entail? Fern or Sharon will make and assessment of your gum health, advise you of any changes to your existing oral health routine that would help you and demonstrate any new techniques. They will then Scale & Polish your teeth.
